I also have an older home and live in a cold climate. I would keep the original windows and would stay away from window salesmen. The new windows will be expensive, won't look as nice as the originals and the payback period on heating and cooling costs will likely be measured in decades rather than years. If you are concerned about saving energy, I would first check to make sure there is enough insulation in the attic and the outside walls. Reglazing and painting will make a big difference. My 2 cents.
