I just happened to be paging through one of my Engineering magazines, Machine Design to be specific. They had a nice review of all the major options for vehicle power without all the political overtones. The alternative they claim made the most sense, at least here in the US was Natural Gas. In fact in the Northeast here they burn natural gas to make electricity. So, rather than burn gas in a plant, send the electricity to your house, use it to charge your car and have to carry around those big expensive batteries. Bypass the whole mess and just fill the car with CNG directly. Still not quite the range of gasoline, but well beyond true electrics and you can refill them in minutes.
Known reserves of Natural Gas in the US would carry us for more than 50 years even if we ran all our vehicles on it.
