1) GM made some pretty crappy diesels in the early 1980's which soured almost everyone on their use in automobiles. GM had a 231 cubic inch V6 diesel (IIRC) that had so little power it couldn't get out of its own way! Life expectancy was low, engine noise was high, and repair costs higher yet.
2) Diesel fuel costs more than gasoline on a dollars per gallon basis. Not on a dollars per mile driven basis, but the dumbing down of American society has caused many to not be able to do the simple math for this calculation.
3) Diesel fuel is not as available as gasoline. It is common for a gasoline station to have 10 pumps to dispense gasoline but only one for diesel fuel. On the interstate expressways diesel fuel is nearly non-existant except for truck stops.
4) Diesel fuel previously had a strong foul odor. The current low suphur fuels almost smell like soap but too few buyers don't know that.
5) Diesel engines used to produce lots of black soot from their exhausts and were noisy. Not true any more but people don't realize it. Many drivers probably never know they are following a diesel powered car on the roadway because of the imrovements in exhaust and noise.
6) So few cars are diesel powered that the average buyer is completely unaware of the fuel mileage improvement these engines offer in automobiles
Dielel fuel is popular in pick-up trucks and larger light duty trucks due to the increased horsepower, torque, and fuel efficiency of the engines. This popularity has not extended into its use as a fuel for automobiles but rather tend to reinforce the American misconception that diesel fuel is only for trucks.
