A family member traded her 9000 for a brand new 2009 Jetta TDI, and this year traded that for a new 2012 Jetta TDI. Unlike the Saabs, the resale value is so good that it's very affordable to trade in every three years.
I've spent quite a bit of time driving them, and love the TDI. The Jetta is not as luxurious or comfortable as a Saab, of course, but a nice clean design and very well built. Some people hate it, but I personally like the "V-Tex" interior (fake leather) - attractive and much more durable.
Fuel economy is amazing - easily gets over 40mpg, and will get close to 50 if you try. With 140hp it will not win any races, but huge torque makes it very driveable, merging and passing is effortless. DSG transmission is clever technology, reliable, shifts quickly and helps the car get better fuel economy than a conventional automatic.
Zero problems. The design does have a known weak point resulting in catastrophic failure of the high pressure fuel pump, but percentage-wise very few cars experience that problem. There is an excellent TDIClub owner community.
