Mine is a D150A, so not the earliest version. At the time, I was really into audio, and thought that although the McIntosh power amps sounded best, they were just too expensive for me. For a solid state power amp, I think the D150a sounds very good.
The D150A's only "weak" points, in my experience, are that the A-B run-of-the-mill potentiometers (not sealed) used for channel volume controls - they tend to get noisy after a few years. Finding decent replacements is not all that easy anymore, but "that auction site" is your friend in this regard. The weird 18v incandescent power lamp is also easy to find, same place.
When I did the most recent repairs, it was a pleasure to see the quality of the construction - beautiful component lead dressing and flawless solder joints. Also very simple to disassemble. It weighs a ton, having an enormous power transformer, large heatsinks and all-metal construction.
