OT: Filling the oil tank with a renter in the house. Posted by B Millar [Email] (#1109) [Profile/Gallery] (more from B Millar) on Wed, 24 Oct 2012 13:02:58 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
This is off topic and I don't think there's a right or wrong answer, but what would you do?
I bought a house and I'm renting a bedroom to a friend to help with the mortgage. All utilities are to be split evenly. Previous owners left me 3/8 of a tank for free. I had it filled this weekend. She's trying to tell me I should pay for the first fill, and we split it for subsequent fill-ups until she moves out, at which time we fill it and split the cost. The way I was looking at it is we just split it now and every time and then I credit her for half of whatever is left in the tank when she moves out, based on the price we paid at the last fill-up.
I guess her way is consistent with all the houses I have rented in the past. Gas/oil tanks are full at move-in, and I leave them full at move-out. I just feel like I'm getting screwed out of a tank of oil up front, but I guess I'm not... Just curious what TSN opinions are.
