OT: Sapsicles from a maple tree Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Wed, 3 Apr 2013 08:52:32 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
One of our Soft Maple trees suffered a split limb over the winter. With the recent daily freeze-thaw cycles this limb is leaking a lot of sap which freezes into "Sapsicles" during the night. It is surprising that even though sap from Hard Maple trees requires a 40:1 reduction to make syrup, and sap from Soft Maple trees contains less sugar content than that, it is possible to taste the sugary sweetness in the drops of sap which ooze from this limb.
I will be cutting this 5-inch limb and sealing the trunk after the sap stops. I think doing it now would be worse for the tree.
