The article has the 9-5 at 3,533 pounds, so the Encore is 300 pounds lighter. Our '03 is likely about the same weight, but has 185 HP. Torque is about 210-215 IIRC. I figure the Encore might at best be equal for normal use, although the smaller engine would have to work harder. But it would need a lot more power to "run rings" around a 9-5.
GM and others are great at giving cars a quick off the line feel via gearing. A snappy 0 to 30 lunge makes people happy! I'm more interested in what happens from 50 to 70 or 60 to 80. Or sometimes 70 to 90. I've driven too many underpowered cars that can't accelerate well in those ranges to be happy with anemic performance.
IMHO, a 3200 pound car needs about 200 HP and 200 to 230 lbs ft of torque to drive properly. I think the 9-5 Linear is a bit underpowered. My 9K, at ~3200 pounds and 240 HP is about right. And could still use another 30-50 horses.
I'm sure the Encore is very nice. I'll try to rent one on an upcoming biz trip.
