You may recall my question about tires on my E46 BMW 330xi from about a month ago...

Here's the situation. We are expecting our first child in a little over two weeks. I've been thinking it would be nice to have a car with a warranty, but am having a tremendously difficult time giving up the Bimmer for a family hauler. I am so torn as to what to do...

Issues with the 2005 BMW 330xi 69,500 miles:
Needs new front CV axels $800
Two to four tires: $400-$800
Has a leaking evaporator core for the AC, no idea how large the leak is: $1800 - though I've thought about recharging to see how long it holds
Infamous E46 cooling system rebuild is about due: $???
Other little E46 demons/lemons, e.g. a future failing window regulators and wiring harnesses for the tail lamps.

Looking at a total of at least ~$3,500 to make it tip top.

The car to replace it would be a CPO'd 2008 one-owner Passat wagon with the TSI engine and complete service history. Same miles as the Bimmer but has a 2 year/24,000 mile warranty. With the trade-in, it would be about wash dollar to dollar. The BMW is frankly a bit of an unknown. My wife bought it on the spot because she liked it so much about 3 years ago. We have a very limited service history on it, so it naturally makes me a little more nervous.

What's the smart way to go in this situation?
