More accurately, you can cross rotate *non-directional* tires easier...
asymmetric just means the tread is not symmetric (mirror image or rotated mirror image).
directional just means the tire is intended to rotate in 1 direction, ie there is an arrow on the side pointing in the direction of rotation.
You can not cross rotate directional tires without taking them off the rims or running them backwards.
You can cross rotate any non-directional tires easily on the rims.
There are 4 combinations of directionality and symmetry possible: non-directional symmetric (most generic all seasons) or non-directional assymetric (most performance oriented tires) cross rotate easily... directional symmetric and directional asymmetric tires, do not cross rotate easily...
however, it seems that directional asymmetric tires are really uncommon because there would need to be left and right molds, and stocking, etc... but for some reason, there are a ton of asymmetric tires that look like they should be directional! Imho, they just look wrong on a car... but I know they work fine. It surprises me that there is such a small impact... but I guess it's also true of the arrowhead style directionals that if you run them backward, they aren't as great in the snow and rain, but otherwise are about the same!
