many all season tires have M+S stamped on them and are pretty much worthless in mud and snow (and rain, and dry pavement)... basically, if it does not have a mountain/snowflake logo, it's not a real snow tire, it's just an all season.
I agree with ELaw, in that if these tires are old and/or worn, they will have grip issues. Most likely the tires that went on a Rav4 were wear oriented all seasons, and if they are old, they will probably not be that great. I would check for spiderline cracks also. More than 6 years old can cause this stuff to start to show up... What tire model was it? How much tread depth is left? less than 4mm could result in loss of grip on wet roads (and certainly in snow) depending on the tire design.
