My '87 9kT turns 3000rpm at 80mph and that feel about right to me as you still have plenty of power at speed without downshifting and without the engine droning away. As long as I'm 70mph+ I don't have to downshift to accelerate moderately hard or go up steep grades. I think the newer 9k are even taller geared which makes sense given the torquier engine. I agree that a lot of cars seem to be short geared these days, but I also hate automatics that are geared too tall and downshift as soon as you touch the throttle. I guess it's a compromise, but given how gutless the 2.0T is before the turbo kicks in compared to a modern car it's hard to believe they would need to be shorter geared on the highway.
