I think it's a bit of a fallacy to equate low rpm with fuel efficiency. My brother had an '82 Capri with a 5.0L engine that ran less than 2000rpm at highway speeds. The thing used up gas faster than you could drink it. Must have been less than 15mpg highway. Meanwhile, my wife's Honda Civic revs at least 30% higher than my 9000, and gets 40% better fuel efficiency. I'm not saying the opposite, that higher revs are better, simply that there's much bigger factors at play.
