I should add... Posted by Snowmobile [Email] (#686) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Snowmobile) on Thu, 10 Apr 2014 06:54:21 In Reply to: Re: Quandry: Fix cosmetic rust or not?, Almostretired, Wed, 9 Apr 2014 13:27:18 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I've also done a little work on our nicer c900. The exposed exterior cosmetic rust was just a few little bubbles (1/8" diameter or less) on 1 fender and a few dime sized spots on a door.
The door had been previously reskinned and repainted by the local Saab body shop. It was paint failure, because their paint was inferior to the original factory paint. The dime sized spots were completely superficial! So make sure the primer they use is outstanding.
The fender repair required removal of the trim strip, and underneath, I found more rust, with about a 1/8" diameter perforation in 2 spots. Otherwise cosmetic. wire brush, POR, bondo to smooth the roughness, lots of sanding, rattle can paint and primer, more sanding, wax, reinstall trim... and it's held up for about 6 years now. The blend is not concourse worthy, but you'd have to look close to see it. Just get a good paint match, mask to minimize the size of the new paint, and then sand the transition with wet 2000 grit. Lots of work, but I'm glad I did it. The door repair is not perfect, but the fender is almost invisible.
I also did the rear fenders on our 9-5 this past fall - there is a spot between the rear door and the fender that goes on all of them, and from the outside it looked like almost nothing... thought I was nipping it in the bud. After digging in and grinding, had a 1/4" hole right through and about 10 sq inches total to respray. Wire brush, clean, POR, and in this case I did a trick POR mentions: POR over fibreglass cloth. It hardens like fibreglass resin and supposedly forms a stronger bond between the cloth and the metal. Anyway, so far so good on that one too. The paint on that is a blue metallic. Match wasn't perfect (mainly in sheen), but with some wax it will be ok. Was late in the year (and was fixing 2 cars at the time) so I didn't get that far!
I guess my point is, if you can catch them before there is any significant perforation, it is way simpler. Others on the 9-5 bb have paid a ton of $$ to fix those spots. For me the most expensive part was the tiny can of POR and a rattle can. Probably $50 tops.
I hate salt.
good luck!
