Ignitions being accidentally turned off happens in all cars. That the GM design for the affected cars wasn't the best, or could have been improved with a $1.50 part, well when does second guessing the engineering and design of a car with regards to safety make the manufacturer negligent or even criminal?
When you slam on the brakes and then hit something is it the manufacturers fault that they didn't spend an extra $1.50 on better brake pads that might have avoided the accident?
Does anytime a manufacturer improve the safety of a vehicle after the fact make it responsible for all accidents involving the design before the improvement?
People die in cars, they are inherently dangerous, and minor design changes could always improve the chances of avoiding that. It seems to me that a design flaw has to meet a much higher standard of danger than a detent that wasn't quite strong enough to prevent every possible instance of accidentally turning the car off, which is a relatively common occurrence in all vehicles.
17, or however many folks it was, die in a car accident over the course of 10 years that *might* be attributable to a design that needed improving and people want to blame big, bad GM. 17 or 170 people a day die in useless conflicts and we just ignore it.
