Registration fees in Illinois Posted by Bill Homer [Email] (#3427) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Bill Homer) on Sun, 11 May 2014 17:32:11 In Reply to: OT: Registration fees for vintage (near vintage?) cars, MI-Roger [Profile/Gallery] , Sun, 11 May 2014 16:10:37 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Illinois has a convoluted tax structure for collecting sales tax on a used car purchase, which is hardly fair since the car was already taxed once when new, but does have a straight $101 fee for annual registration ($114 for vanity plates). Title and plate fees are additional.
There are a couple of options for real "antique" cars, which here means 25+ years old. "Antique Vehicle" plates are for "Vehicles displaying these plates may only be driven to and from an antique auto show or exhibition, service station or demonstration" cost is $6 per year. An "Antique Vehicle - Expanded Use" plate is for "Vehicles displaying these plates during the months of April-October may be driven on the highways without being subject to the restrictions of a standard antique vehicle plate."; cost is $51 per year - I have these on my Volvo 1800E.
