There better be some good reasons for doing things a certain way...
I think that Saab blazed the turbo-4 trail before anyone else saw the merit in it. They followed this model because they believed that an efficient engine with the power in reserve for passing was a responsible, elegant, and intelligent way to propel their cars. This meant that their cars were a bit more expensive and required more attention from their owners (a small price to pay for the benefits, they reasoned).
Not enough of the buying public agreed with Saab, so Saab's financials softened, to the point we see now. Of course, the buying public can now get a turbo-4 from the domestics (GM should have written Saab a thank-you letter for that tech) and even BMW (who was on record saying that NA engines will always be the heart and soul of their cars) as well as many others. Turns out, Saab had a good answer before the question was even being asked.
