A very good and thorough intro to electronics design is "The Art of Electronics" by Horowitz and Hill. This contains waaaaay more than you will likely need to do what you want to do. Still, it only is an introduction.
Funny, googling it to get a link for you, I found a link to a PDF which may be the whole thing! Insane. First PDF I've opened (or at least attempted to open) that exceeded 1000 pages. If interested, I would strongly recommend buying the real thing. Printing that pdf would probably cost more! See link.
Others may have other suggestions, but beyond that, just google up some similar projects. Be very careful if you are doing mains wiring to do it properly. If you burn your house down or get fried, it's not a good thing!
There are probably kits to do this also if you google them. Probably no more expensive than the piece parts and probably include the instructions you'd want.
