Vvack,
In general you are correct, Hydraulic lifters negate the need for valve train adjustment but old push rod engines with hydraulic lifters often require a "basic setting" of valve lash using the method I described. The rocker is positioned on a stud and unless that adjustment is carried out the depth of that rocker on it's stud can be way too high or way too low. If it's too high you'll have slack in the valve train and the lifter will not be compressed enough to serve it's purpose and the push rod might even escape into a new realm. If it's set too low the lifter will be in an overly compressed state at all times and not serve it's purpose and possibly even prevent the valve from closing fully. Once set up properly that old push rod/hydraulic lifter engine will run quiet like any modern engine with hydraulic lifters and overhead cams. I'm not ashamed to admit that I have rebuilt many V8 Detroit engines (am I?).
