Yes, if one of the lifters had collapsed, there would be an awful racket going on, and it would not produce the symptoms I'm seeing.
Contrary to what vvackomatic says anyway, if it was collapsed, and it pumped up after my lash adjustment (which I guess he thinks isn't necessary on hydraulic lifters? haha....) there is not enough internal travel in the lifter to cause interference between the valve and the piston (in my case at least).
Anyway back to the original question/answer: In addition to posting here, I was talking with a coworker who knows this like the back of his hand. He suggested loosening the rockers until there's plenty of play in everything, then priming my oil system to pump up the lifters, and then going about setting the valve lash.
