This is interesting. They actually do make front loaders also, and they are not gargantuan. You're a DIY guy - how is the availability of parts and service manuals for Speed Queen? or has this been a non-issue? To me, that (along with low energy usage) is the most important aspect of a washer/dryer purchase.
The high-efficiency part is not nonsense imho. Even if you prefer old-fangled things and don't care a bit about the environment/environmentalists etc (and fair enough), the HE machines save a ton of money in terms of electricity. Or at least they used to. Our setup used nearly 1/10th the energy of the standard top loaders when we bought them! It is possible that top loaders have improved, but by how much? Most of the $ savings comes from the clothes holding less water when they go into the dryer, thereby vastly reducing dryer power requirements. Hard to spin out all that well with a top loader. Water bill is lower also. Money talks!
I'm not saying there are not pros to top loaders, but I'd find it hard to go back. Some might have the opposite experience.
