looks like newer top loaders are mostly vastly more energy efficient than those 10 years ago. Up here, they put a tag on the appliance noting "typical annual costs" in kwh, $ with electric water tank, and $ with gas water tank. Ours was around $10 (130kWh), the top loaders were up over $100/y, but now many top loaders are down around our numbers, many are energy star rated. I am having trouble finding numbers for the dryers, but that's where the big power usage is, especially if the clothes are not spun as dry. Our dryer was also way on the low end of the scale. Didn't take too long to break even back then, but nowadays if you pick an energy star top loader, it may not be cost effective anymore to go front loading, especially if they have a high spin speed on the top loader (some are 800 rpm now etc).
