I think in general internally geared hubs are reliable. I have one bike with a Rohloff 14 speed internal hub which I love, though that's well beyond what you are looking for. I hear good things about the less expensive models as well. With the Rohloff, virtually no maintenance other than changing the gear oil every 5,000 km!
Removing and replacing the rear wheel is a bit more complicated, but you just have to remember to do the right steps in the right sequence. One thing I love for city riding is that you can shift while coasting or even while stopped - so you don't need to anticipate shifts as much as with a derailleur, say if you are approaching a stoplight. Also, of course less cleaning/adjustment, particularly in bad weather.
So for a city bike I'd go internal. Though derailleurs work fine as well of course.
