Internal Geared Hubs = good idea Posted by Sondeen [Email] (#796) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Sondeen) on Fri, 10 Apr 2015 13:52:54 In Reply to: "City" Bikes, No Snaab, Fri, 10 Apr 2015 05:20:49 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
From what I understand, these internal multi-speed hubs are quite durable.
I know a couple cyclists with these hubs on their bikes. One coworker commutes to work every day, year round, any weather, in Hartford CT area, 7-8 miles round trip, plus trips around town afterwork and weekends. He has a Shimano 8 speed Nexus internal rear hub on his bike for maybe 4 years now, he likely has close to 10,000 miles on it. He has not mentioned any issues with it to me, and he likes to talk about his bikes whenever possible. Another buddy bought a bike last Spring, it is a Scott, and might be of interest to you. It has a Shimano multi-speed internal hub, a Gates belt drive instead of a chain (no oiling, no rust), it also has 700c wheels with wide slick tires. He uses it around the neighborhood and on the rail trails to tow his toddler in a trailer. He raves about the belt drive and internal hub. He loves it for this purpose, while he also has a high end road bike with Campy components for long rides with his cycling buddies.
I hear the Rolloffs can give you more speeds than Shimano, but are more $. I think the down side to these hubs is that they are heavy and expensive. I aso don't think they shift quite as fast as a deraileured bike, and you can't swap out the gear cassette to change ratios like you can with a modern derailured set up, but for a city bike you are not going to bother with that anyway, and won't necessarily care about lightning fast downshifts. I think the internal hub is perfect application for the for the use you are describing,
