I certainly think that a phone or PC is more reliable than a person. Sure they crash, but so do people. Computers are also quite a bit more attentive and faster reacting. There are default and back up systems as well as a steering wheel and a brake pedal. I can very much understand the argument that autonomous cars will greatly reduce accidents. It's much harder to distract a computer. Considering the price of computing power it certainly seems inevitable.
