So far autonomous cars only go about 25 mph in rather benign environments. Getting them to operate in every day fast and congested traffic, is a hurtle that may have many problems. The type of accidents most likely will change, as for a start we now see autonomous cars being rear ended. Going forward other types of accidents will emerge, as real drivers try to out maneuver them, especially if they remain slow, clunky, and have irritating habits.
Since the average car is about 11 years old, it will take that long to have half the cars autonomous, unless a lot of money is thrown at replacing good cars. Will there be another clunker program? One way or the other there is a lot of money to be made if the government gets involved.
How long will it take for the electronics in an autonomous car to be recalled, upgraded, or replaced due to obsolescence or degradation? Will the average life of a car decrease or be arbitrarily limited due to liability of decreasing reliability of aging electronics.
Autonomous cars bring into mind all the guarding and cages around robots and automated machines in factories. If all those cages are required when autonomous cars are made, how do you expect be protected from them when they are allowed to free range.
