Battery cable terminals, tap on?

I've just pushed the cable terminals onto the battery as much as possible. On my 9-5, that leaves them with less than full contact on the battery as a little of the cable terminal is above the battery terminal, perhaps 95% percent contact. It's always worked without issue. A mechanic tapped mine all the way on so the cable terminal bottoms out on the battery terminal. I'm wondering if that is ideal or if the cable could be hard to remove. I think he did this using a socket and rubber mallet, but perhaps there are other ways. I see there are battery terminal spreader tools.
Curious what others think as far as improving my technique on this basic task.
Any thoughts on terminal protector? Can that help the wire end that is exposed from corroding?
