Safety & reliability should be a big concern if you are doing a lot of driving. You can save a bundle over a lifetime if you can avoid car payments. I'm in a similar situation with JerseySaab. I've done my own work ever since taking Auto Shop in high school way back in 1979-1980.
We keep one good car for my wife & I drive the clunker. My wife drives three miles to work & I live one mile from work. If we take a road trip we rent a car or fly.
In my opinion the sweet spot that you are looking for is when a car is five to seven years old. I would shop on line for a low mile run of the mill car. High production cars are easier to find and get parts for.
Take your savings and invest in things that go up in value; real estate or mutual funds.
