I keep 1 large tube of rubber cement at home. I keep it in a zip-lock bag. Generally, I swap tubes while trail riding and patch them at home at my leisure.
If I have to patch trailside, I usually have 2 or 3 of the small cement tubes in my patch kit, one of which is always new/unopened. I try the opened ones first, and if all are dried up, use the unopened one.
