Moved my 89 year old father into one of these facilities (suburban Boston) in mid-March. He suffered a stroke in early-December and got the last rights Christmas Eve but rallied over the next two months in a rehab facility (a bit under $10K/month) and somehow survived with minor physical impairment and memory loss.
The 83 year old girlfriend he had been living with (and who we never liked) basically kicked him to the curb afterwards after burning through his life savings at the local Indian casinos so my sister and I scrambled to find a place for Dad after he was released from rehab. We considered moving him to California to live with me and my family but his bladder cancer that had been in remission for two years is back and he needs to be where all his doctors are.
The new place is very nice and his room is like a studio apartment. Three squares a day, and they assist with showers and meds, provide limited therapy, and even have a happy hour to keep the residents in good spirits. The cost is a bit under $3900/month which I pay for my father (looks like my retirement will be shorter lived than I thought...).
I have no idea what I'll do when I get that old. My father, a WWII combat veteran, has an exceptional will to live. Me? I'll probably take the bus to the beach and go for a very long swim in the ocean.
Oh, and if your kids tell you that the woman you take up with after your spouse passes away is no good, listen to them lest she, a gambling addict, burn through your $200K in cash savings and make you a financial burden on your kids.
