I rode in a friend's 1990's Sentra, back in the 1990's. The car felt just like any other 1990's car. Has there been any real tightening of crash safety by the US government since then? Besides the reduced pressured airbag requirement and crash safety to pedestrians. Keep in mind, SUV's, being light trucks, skirted most of the tightening of government regulations.
The major influence on vehicle crash safety in the US in the past two decades has been the IIHS, which is a private organization put together by insurance companies. They conduct standardized tests, and manufacturers design cars to earn higher star ratings there, for better or for worse (the latter due to tailoring design to tests instead of real life safety).
One consistent piece of data from IIHS is that crash survivability is highly correlated to the worth of the vehicle (i.e. depreciated value of the used vehicle at the time of the crash). Seems to indicate consumers are actually very good at shopping for their own safety given their own means. Excessive regulations on new cars may actually prevent/delay people from getting into newer cars with improved crash-survival technology.
