1993 saab 900 red was definitely no clear coat from the factory. Eg if you buff it with Mothers paint prep, you get lots of orangy red oxidized paint coming off and the car goes back to a deep red colour. they need to be waxed regularly. Repair shops usually do clearcoat their work, but the original paint was not. I can't imagine the 9000 used different paint than the 900 for that year.
Ours has some clear coat from a repair shop, and that is now peeling and it is a huge mess. I wish I could have got a paint more close to the factory paint! All the non-repainted parts of the car are easy to maintain. Not sure what to do about the peeling as it will continue I'm sure... probably requires a full re-do now to look right!
