a four wheel drive truck that had a covered back was a truck, not a wagon. Like the International Scout and Carry All, and the full size K5 Blazer. Those were trucks. They were cool and utlitarian. Then came the more car like small trucks: S-10 Blazer, Bonco II. These were trucks, but were more jeep sized. Now SUVs really are wagons (in actual use), with most retaining the worst features of a truck (handling, fuel economy), but in a package palatable to a mother of three. The cache of the original SUV (macho, rough, get you anywhere confidence) was engineered and/or marketed out of the larest generation. C'est la vie.
