Do not start out by using any polishing compound or rubbing compound....both are abrasive by definition.
Find an automotive paint store and purchase a wax and grease remover. Its a liquid that will take any grease, undercoating, bugs, etc. off of the finish in a very gentle manner. You may have to rub a little depending on the degree of the stain. Dupont calls their product Prep Sol #3919. Three M also has one too as the other paint manufacturers like PPG and Sherwin Williams (some of these may be found in a good hardware store too). It does remove wax too, so, remember to wax the afected areas when done.
