Not everyone is a car guy/gal, not everyone is as sophisticated as a Saab. The majority of people want a car that starts everytime you turn the key and is affordable. Pickups and vehicles like the malibu and Impala fit that bill. That is GM's niche: people of moderate means who need transportation.
The issue of taste is subjective and is a function of local values. In rural America, a big car with lots of chrome is what people want, or a truck, etc. In New England people want Saabs. For this reason I would not fault GM for making cars which you (and I for that matter) find ugly.
My biggest complaint about GM is their pricing on any of their desirable products. I liked the Aurora. I rented one on business and liked its ride and the engine. I found it comfortable and thought it would be a great commuter car, until I saw that they wanted close to USD35,000 for it! I would be willing to pay USD22,000 to 25,000 for it. Oh well.
