GM has relied on marketing rather than product for much too long, even though their new cars are a nice improvement over the past.
The Accord is much better in EVERY way (ok, maybe less hp) than an Impala, and can be had for less money. Same goes for a civic versus the Malibu. But, there is still a huge number of people who like the big bad cruiser, which the is the Impala and large buicks. And trucks, well, GM trucks are very nice by truck standards, and that old proven pushrod tech is desirable because it is reliable. I have a 99 S10 4X4, and I love it. It does everything I would expect of a truck well, and has never had a single expense aside from oil and gas.
GM is arrogant, and is not run by auto enthusiasts. The Cimeron is the best example of marketing arrogance. A GM engineer in response to an Auto journalist's question about the differences between the Cimeron and the Cavilier said: "7,000 dollars."
In small town America GM's poorly designed products did not pass unnoticed. I remember when my family in Iredell County North Carolina switched from Cadilacs to Mercedes Diesels in the 1980's. The Cadilacs were such pieces of SH!T, expensive and UGLY. When it came time to replace them they bought a 300D and a 300SD. They still have these cars, having put over 300,000 on one. They look new, unlike a three year old cadilac.
GM is getting better, but eally needs to focus on selling more cars that people want, like Ford is doing with the Focus. I wish Ford had bought Saab instead. If they had, we would see some much better products from Saab, instead of the now cliche SUV.
Oh well. My next new car will NOT be a Saab. They drive like Hondas but are not as reliable. I will probbaly get an A4 or an S60. I'm rambling.
