Sadly, the old Saabs are getting older.....

Here in Connecticut, Saab Country, I have seen many of the older 900's and 9000's (1980's) beginning to show their age. I am starting to see many broken down on the highways here and just this past weekend, I saw 2 900's in seperate parking lots being towed away. My 1984 900 started to show rust last month as did my mother's '88. My girlfriend's '88 9000 was just sold to a highschool teenager and that had a growing list of needed repairs. But the worst of it all is that I seen C900's and 9000's on those trucks that carry crushed cars to those scrap metal plants, something I am not used to.
It is never easy to see a Saab broken down or even a flattened one on its way to the scrap yard. Maybe its because they were all born in the same place in Sweden that I feel all Saabs are a part of a unique brotherhood--as if each Saab were alive and could recognize one from the next. I have begun to make the change into the next generation myself by buying a 1995 9000 and also deciding that my 1984 (300k miles) will not get any more work,it will now run til it stops and then goodbye forever (but thank god it still runs like a lean, mean Swedish machine--its just old and slow)
I suppose its now time to accept Saab as the new yuppie car except for those of us that were in the trenches fixing head gaskets and wondering why the car is never level even if parked on flat ground. We may be of a rare breed in the years to come with Saab and it seems that it is all beginning as we speak. The end of a great era is upon us as the 900's and the 9000's slowly retire from their many years of faithful service and we welcome the new and improved 9-5's and 9-3's into the family.
