The transitions have been tough for me. I end up keeping everything. I have trouble parting with my SAABs. I don't really know what it is. I have NO trouble selling a motorcycle or a truck or a boat. Its just the SAABs, I can't bear to see them go, and I end up "rescuing" more all the time. I will say however that since they are showing up more and more in junkyards, its much easier to keep them going. My current fleet includes:
1985 900 My first SAAB. Its green with a tan turbo interior. Everything is right with this car. It has been sitting in my garage since 1994 when I decided I wanted to keep it forever. I run it around the block every couple months to keep it fresh. It is a really nice car.
1987 Turbo Convertable. Also very nice, I always wanted one of these. ( My mom has an 89 and I was always jelious.) I remeber borrowing it to use on dates. I searched a long time for my own convertable. It is really nice red 87 with a perfect tan leather interior, a perfect dash, and a new top. It has the origional boot, and a large pinion bearing rebuilt transmission. This car only gets driven on nice summer days. It spends the rest of the time next to the 85.
1978 99 turbo. I couldn't pass this one up. It was acutally for sale at a SAAB dealer. I got it for a song. It has the funny inca wheels and is a fun car. I was driving it every day for a while, but the non-power steering and pathetic heat made me find it a home in my friends barn. The car has new paint, and not a spec of rust. The interior is quite nice with a new headliner and decent( a little faded, but not torn up seats )
This is a good example of the "forgotten" saab. I'll try to preserve it
1989 9000 CD turbo. This is the newest car I ever owned. It is a handsome family cruiser, and is a great car for road trips, but it doesn't excite me the way the 900s do. I will say that it seems more reliable.
1984 900S I rescued this car from the junkyard 4 years ago. It was near flawless with a bad auto. I replaced the transmission and It was a great car for the next 55K. The replacement auto just started showing signs or wear, so it is now halfway through the auto-5spd conversion. Luckily one of the 900s I parted out had a rebuilt tranny with less then 10K on it! What a find!. I always had a special place in my heart for this car. It is slow and clunky, but it is very handsome. Admiral blue with blue interior. It actually has the origional headliner. It never fell down!
This will become a spare when its finished. Hopefully I will find it indoor storage.
1984 900 turbo (ol' red)
Ol red is the newest addition to the fleet. I bought it because it made a good "utility vehicle". It is a little ratty looking, but a great runner with a rebuilt 5spd ( a few years back). Ol red is a blast to drive and since it is no show car I use it to haul junkyard parts and tow my boat. Ol red isn't rusty underneith, so it'll probably be around for a while.
I have only ever sold two SAABs.
The first was an 84 900. It was a junkyard rescue. I had $310 into it. I put a used 5spd in it and drove it to college (Temple). I eventually sold it to a friend who used it for a few months and then parked it. It is very ratty looking, but not rusty and still a okay car. I miss this car. It is alot like ol red. I always enjoyed the 8 valve engines the most. They have a nice sound at 5000RPM, and the non- sway bar cars in my opinion are more fun on back roads because it is easier to get them "loose" around the corners. I bought a MSS header for my 85, I hope to install it and a hotter cam. It will be a fun car like this one was if I ever put it back on the road.
The last SAAB I sold was an 86 900T. It was the fastest car I ever owned. It had a 85 motor, different primary gears in tranny, and a tweaked APC, and a 2.8 bar regulator. It was sooo fast. I drove this car like it was stolen. It would spin tires in 3rd gear. As fast as it was, I never really got attached to it. It was a good car, never really broke (expecpt the lower timing gear at 100k). I sold it to a friend of mine. He loved it, but only got to enjoy it for 1 month. His wife wrecked it. No one was hurt but the car.
Add this to 5 parts cars, and I have had my share of SAABS.
