Fixed-wing flying, as another has already mentioned, is hours and hours of monotony highlighted with a few moments of excitement, also know as emergencies.
If you are interested in a more exciting form of flying which may not pay quite as well as the commericial airline industry but will reward you in other ways, let me suggest helicopters. I have been an EMS helicopter pilot for the past 11 years. It is certainly interesting, sometimes exciting, and truly provides one a sense of importance in the community. The route I took to this field began with the US Army which offered me the best training; opportunities to fly around the world, and credentials which qualified me for any EMS program in the country.
Check it out. Visit the crew of your local EMS helicopter program as well as your local Army recruiter.
