I was a paramedic for 8 years. I spent some time in air operations w the US park service and the US Geo Survey as well as a ground medic in conjunction w medivac in W. Mass.
My impression was that the training you guys need is very difficult to get in the military? Are there EMS pilots who have come to their trade by their own bootstraps or from the oil industry or are they all ex-military?
The pilots I have worked with, especially in Hawaii and Yellowstone, have been phenomonal aviators with a command of machine and terrain that I have never come close to in a C 182. I am a med student in Ohio now and even in the civilized and "controlled" flatlands, I am still impressed by the ability of the medivacs to operate in IFR on an almost routine basis.
