My 900SE V6 had a sprocket fail, the belt didn't break. The total was over $5K.
Since mine was an unusual failure Saab USA paid for 2/3 of the repair as a "goodwill" gesture.
Questions:
1. is the car out of warranty? If so, by how much? (time or miles)
2. was the belt replaced according to the maintenance schedule? (every 30K)
If the belt was replaced according to the Saab schedule and you have the records (or they were done by a dealer and entered into the computer) you may be able to contact Saab USA and talk them into paying at least part of the bill. They are pretty flexable about warranty issues if the car was properly maintained.
