In the late '80s I had to use Enterprise while my car was in the body shop. The car had a few door dings and was missing the tire jack (unknown to me at the time). Anyway, I had a hassle when returning the car because I was held "responsible" for the dings and the missing jack because I didn't have them noted on the rental contract.
Since they placed a $1000 block on my credit card for the rental I had to deal with my credit card company to get the charges removed. I haven't rented from them since because the few dollars I saved weren't worth the hassle.
Of course, it may have just been the local rental office being hard on me -- not the parent corporation -- but it soured me enough to avoid them since. I'm sure other people have had very positive experiences with Enterprise and, if so, I'd encourage them to use them again. For me, however, I'll rent a crappy Lumina from Avis before I'll deal with them again. Other people I work with have had similar hassles with the smaller rental car companies.
