Digital is nice for some things, but it doesn't beat the quality and
versatility of real film and cameras yet.
Resolution is just one things to consider. Digital cameras are improving
quite nicely in that respect, but there's more to a picture than it's
sharpness. Color and contrast quality is SO PREDICTABLE with regular slide film. There are a hundred different films you can choose to get the original you want. Playing with the controls afterwards in photoshop is
fruitless if the original doesn't have in it what you want. WIth a digital
camera in Black and White, you have simple black and white mode. With film
you have several styles of black and white film with different appeals.
When I can shoot digital in a SLR with my existing lenses at the magnifications they were designed for (less expensive digital SLRs
magnify the image, good for sports, not for general purpose), and
not have to pay more for the camera body than for a used Saab convertible, I will buy a new digital camera to supplument my existing collection.
I've had my Nikon F4s for 11 years now and it's still a good machine. A digital camera that costs half as much is good for 2 years before
it's outdated, and that is not appealing to me. I do like my
digital camera for it's ability to take a photo and have it on the
web in minutes.
