We have had or have 13 Saabs in our family in the last 10 years. Currently I have a newer 9-5, my sons have '85 & 89 900's. We've had 4 9000's. All have been excellent moderate maintainance cars. The 9-5 (first Saab in years with an excellent reliability history) has been the most troublesome by far.
Most of our Saabs were purchased used. If you're careful you can easily find a well maintained car in your price range. Our highest mileage was an '88 SPG which met with an untimely death at around 260k.Until the accident it was still a daily driver with much oomph! My son's '89 900s still looks and drives like a new car at 155k.
It is important...no essential... to have a good Saab mechanic who you can trust. These cars are a little unusual...that adds to the enjoyment.
Dive in...once you've owned a Saab, nothihg else will do.
