Anyone read about the "gearless" transmissions? Instead of a fixed set of gears, they use chains to create one infinitely variable gear. This way, the revs never change at a given throttle position, ie they're always at the torque peak. Besides being more efficient than either manual or automatic transmissions, they provide better performance since your power is constant and you don't have the delay of gear changes. This is the future of transmissions, and will probably be what you see in most cars in 20 years, not the transmissions of today. They allow for the laziness of an automatic but provide better performance and fuel economy than a manual.
You are right about the slow demise of the "driver's" car. (A good example is BMW's recent decision to ADD power assist to the 3-series.) Let's face it for most people, the car is just a way to get from point A to point B. For those with more money, it's a way to get from point A to point B and look good doing it. There will always be people like us who want more than that. While the options for an enjoyable driving machine may dwindle, they will always be some out there. My fear is that they will eventually be limited to high-priced cars such as Porche, Ferarri, and upper-end BMW.
