Now that you mention it - it is just like the new Beetle! The "old" Beetles are still in production in Latin America - its just the "Western World" that gets the new model... Therefore, by arguement - it is a "cheesy attempt", just like the Beetle. My point is that there seems to be a pervasive culture of "instant heritage" that can be bought by manufacturers and sold to dupe consumers who believe that they're getting the pinnacle of a design evolution and all of the benefits of years of development via a brand identity. This is a true statement for Saab - I own both a '69 96 and an '86 900S. There is a definite evolution of design evident between the two cars (including identical parts). But - they are made buy the same manufacturer who has the design equity. The old Mini is only recently out of production, yes - but it (like the Saab 96) has been produced for many years on the identical platform (don't fix it if it ain't broke). The new Mini is produced by a different manufacturer (not Austin) with nothing but a logo and mystique bought from Austin's "going out of business" sale.
This is just personal opinion - as a designer and owner of both classic and modern cars. I'm not telling the world not to buy them, just that they're not getting the Mini heritage that they may think...
I'll quit now - its really not that important, thanks for listening.
