My father worked (as a doctor) in Jeddah from 1981 to 1985. I was at school then and visited him during school holidays.
Jeddah was (and probably is) the most "international" and thus relaxed place in KSA. They are probably stricter about dress code and "non-Muslim behaviour" in Riyadh.
Since I was there, however, embassies have moved from Jeddah to Riyadh; so get yourself a friend at the embassy - especially if you can't stand life without beer/booze (you can make wine yourself - your future colleagues will no doubt have some good recipies - and all supermarkets have prime grape juice in glass bottles ... conveniently placed next to the yeast...).
If you're extrovert you'll be all right. There are loads of Westerners (Europeans and North Americans) - not to mention Filipinos, Pakistanis and Yemenis - and most will be just as bored as you ... and thus on the look-out for any interesting activity. As for cinemas ... well, there aren't any. But embassies and international schools may organise concerts (both by amateurs and imported professionals), musicals, theatre, film projections etc. Also look out for notice boards in those places as well as at super markets. It's a good way to find a tennis partner.
Otherwise, crime is almost non-existant (apart from the suppression and religious tyranny the people are subjected to by the royal family and clergy).
Oh, and whether you're from Sicily or Nevada ... temperaturewise you ain't seen nothing yet!
Regards,
Caspar
PS Just to keep this Saab-related ... get yourself a 9-5 there and drive defensively. I repeat: drive defensively!!! The drivers in KSA are complete lunatics - and mostly uninsured!!!
