As an existing SAAB & Volvo owner, I think Volvo is coming into it's own niche. As a new V40 owner (the smaller wagon) I can state that these cars exude quality. The V70 still retains some of the "boxy" characteristics of the tradional volvo wagon style, whereas the V40 has abandoned that style and adopted a more fluid style. For all it's worth, I think you should seriously consider your reasons for choosing one car over another ,i.e. safety, styling, performance, uniqueness? My primary consideration was safety - I received more standard safety features for every dollar spent in my price range from Volvo than any other car maker. The second consideration was performance, third, styling. I can't comment on the V70R versus 9-5 Wagon, although as far as styling goes, I think the V70R has the upper hand.
As for return trips to the dealer, I have had 2 trips in total since taking delivery (6 months ago) 1) tightening of condenser hoses as condensation was leaking into the passenger compartment, and 2) a recall of the diode in the automatic climate control. Not a big deal as the dealer will bend over backwards to keep you happy.
All in all, I am very pleased with the performance (1.9l turbo, 179 lb ft of torque @ 1800 rpm) and versatility; wagon, suv, luxury/sport sedan all rolled up into one!
