Chip - buddy. Read the numbers on SUV sales. In their current platforms, they are going the way of the hula hoop.

I don't begrudge the drivers so much as I do the manufacturers who, as Forbes points out, fluked in on what people want (functionality) by way of fancy trucks and not through devising a ground-up multi-hauler that was as fuel-efficient and safe as it was functional. People were duped into believing that safety = size and especially height above see level.

It is my belief that all the negative publicity from the Explorer, and now the half ton trucks (only one of which, the Toyota is safe on impact), and the Cherokee; before these the Suzuki Sidekick and the Izuzu Trooper (one of which tipped over in front of my very eyes not 200' from my front door) coupled with environmental consciousness is doing these monsters in.

Not before time.

I think the sociology students of this world should do surveys at the stops these moms frequent. Perhaps just by asking the questions there could be some serious re-thinking done by the thicker-headed of them. I look to the smart moms to be leading the charge out of these units and the sales numbers bear me out on that. Pity the poor bloke who tries to get rid of one of the worst of them two years from now.

As for leaving the motors running....have you seen the ads for these things? 9/10 times you see them cruising the greenest pastures and nicest mountainside vistas in the world. So they are, by definition, sold as Earth-Friendly (and Earth-conquering, aggressive, and dominating.)

As well, I look to the better design houses to deliver acceptable substitutes for soccer transportation.

CAVEAT: I've been wrong before. If I were right all the time, I should be spending my time at the race track or Las Vegas.
