physics question.........

A friction question that nt moore gave to his physics class
appeared on the 9000 bb. It was a fairly complex question, one
I'm not sure I'd want to give to architecture students to contemplate.
Here's one that's a little more elementary: Is it easier to lift a car
or to push it (assuming the emergency brake is on)?
Assume the friction force on the car is proportional to 'mu' and mg,
eh? Since, the force required to just lift the car is mg, the question
reduces to whether 'mu' is greater or less than unity. Here's some
data on stopping distances vs. speed (US Bureau of Public Roads).
I'll use ordered pairs, eg. (distance,speed): (20,20),(28,25),(41,30),
(53,35), (72,40),(93,45),(118,50),(149,55),(182,60),(221,65),(266,70).
a. Use Newton's 2nd law to show that the velocity squared
equals twice the distance multiplied by the product of 'mu' and
acceleration due to gravity.
b. Let x=lnv and y=lnd, then (a) reduces to the linear equation:
y=2x-ln(2µg). Use a least squares analysis to determine µ. What
does your answer say about the original question? Do you believe
the result? Comments?
